Cato’s Adam Thierer on Copyright Maximalism

The Cato Institute is a libertarian think tank in Washington. They are not known for their support of wild-eyed commie hippies. They also don’t seem to like Larry Lessig much. But Adam Thierer, their point man on IP issues, has written a very smart piece about why heavy-handed copyright legislation and regulation (like the Broadcast Flag and the DMCA’s prohibition on traffic in circumvention devices) are not necessary to protect copyrights. The RIAA lawsuits are misguided, he argues, but they’re better than Even Yet More Rent-Seeking.
